ROY REESE Rest In Peace ..The OK TEXANS family is saddened by the loss of one of our teachers. |
Roy Rees was a soccer enthusiast who embodied in every sense of what it means
to be a teacher of the game. He came to the USA in the early 1980s to give soccer clinics
and eventually settled in Texas, where he co-founded the Houston Texans, from
which spawned the Dallas Texans. As head coach of the US U-17 National Team from 1985 through 1993, Roy Rees led
the team to four consecutive appearances in the World Cup. After his stint as U.S. U-17 coach, Rees continued to serve as a U.S Soccer
coaching instructor through 1997 and before his retirement directed youth clubs
in Oklahoma (Tulsa Thunder) and Southern California (Southwest SC and Santa
Anita). He was a board member of U.S. Club Soccer when it was founded in
2001.
"Roy Rees' resume as a coach speaks for itself, but
it pales in comparison to all of the lives he touched through the game. The way
he brought the game to life through his words and teachings has inspired many to
follow in his footsteps. Though his time with Tulsa Thunder was brief, his
impact was great and for myself it was a turning point. Thanks Roy for your
service in youth soccer, and as he would say it "well done big
man!" ......Michael Nsien II
